We are our past. We accumulate memories. Some of us fear the dark. Some of us hate being alone.
All of these aspects of our existence lay dormant in us, ready to be triggered at any moment. Often we don’t realise why something seems familiar or gives us a certain feeling.
Using my visual language to communicate, I try to find a balance between the fear and empathy that define us, and the methods we use to conceal them or protect ourselves against them. Fear is a very important, natural instinct, but should never be used as a tool to manipulate the helpless or uninformed. As part of my research process, hundreds of blind drawings were completed whilst reading other people’s accounts of fear and empathy.
“We must learn to regard people less in the light of what they do or omit to do, and more in the light of what they suffer.” ― Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Letters and Papers from Prison.
