My work is centred around the idea of humans extending their lives with prosthetics and other medical devices and implants. I work with materials associated with industrially produced components for mechanical construction. This gives the brooches a sterile aesthetic that complements the idea of a human as something that can be repaired with machine or man-made parts. The collective name for the pieces is Inanimate Humanity – inanimate because it infers animation and thus programming, artificial intelligence and cyborgs. The pieces attach to the wearer’s clothing in a way that makes them seem to extend out of the body.
